What does a physiotherapist do?

At your assessment, you will meet with a registered physiotherapist who will get to know you and how your injury is impacting your life. Specific questions will help guide the physiotherapist to better understand the type of injury you have and how to customize a care plan that will be most effective given your circumstance.

Next, your physiotherapist will guide you through specific movements and perform some special tests that will further assist in ruling some conditions in or out. This will further help establish the best course of treatment for your injury with the highest likelihood of speeding up your recovery.

You can expect that in most cases, treatment for your condition will begin the very first day. This will ensure we can get you on the road to pain relief, better mobility, and back to your regular daily routine as quickly as possible.

Based on the findings from your assessment, your physiotherapist will create a custom care plan tailored just for you, taking into consideration your health history, severity of your injury, as well as your short- and long-term goals.

You will be progressed through your treatment plan from visit to visit at a pace you are comfortable with and to ensure you are always on track toward a full and sustainable recovery from your condition. Your physiotherapy treatment may include hands-on treatment (manual therapy), a therapeutic active exercise routine that empowers you to get better at home between sessions, and several options of modalities to assist in your rehabilitation such as kinesiology tape, acupuncture or dry-needling, electrotherapy (TENS), shockwave, or ultrasound.

Do benefits cover physiotherapy?

Most extended health benefits providers offer coverage for physiotherapy services; however, each plan can be different.  It’s best to check with your provider to see if you’re covered.

Additionally, physiotherapy can be funded privately or through other types of insurance such as Motor Vehicle Accident insurance, Worker’s Compensation (for example WSIB), or through public funding (for example OHIP). Contact us and we’ll gladly help you find your best option for coverage.

We don’t require any referrals for you to access physiotherapy services.

What is the difference between physiotherapy and physical therapy?

Physiotherapy and physical therapy are the same thing although you may find that one term is more commonly used in certain countries than the other.  For example, in Canada it is more common to use the term physiotherapy or physio but in the United States physical therapy is more commonly used.

What is the difference between a physiotherapist and a chiropractor?

Although both physiotherapy and chiropractic care are delivered by professionals with extensive education and training, there may be some key differences worth noting.

Physiotherapists typically focus on restoring your pain free movement and help you return to all your usual activities. Hands on treatment including sometimes manipulations of the spine may be provided, along with exercises to help you progress independently between sessions and maintain your gains.

On the other hand, chiropractic care may help you achieve pain relief through a focus on proper alignment of your spine and joints. Chiropractors will commonly use manipulations or adjustments as a primary treatment strategy.

You might find that either or both these professionals can help you with your specific rehabilitation goals. We can help you customize a plan that works best for your needs.
